Nomination

Screening
Upon receipt of an alert for gifted screening, the Gifted Screening Parent Notification letter is sent home, advising parents that the student will be screened.. Screenings are typically done individually using the Kaufman Brief Intelligence Test (KBIT-2). Occasionally, individual or group administration is completed using the Naglieri Nonverbal Ability Test (NNAT). Screenings are either completed by myself or the gifted program teacher.
A student must score at the 90th percentile or higher (a composite score of 119 or higher) to qualify for further evaluation. Screening results will be sent home along with an explanation of the score.
Students can be screened once every twelve months.
Evaluation
If the student scores at or above the 90th percentile on the screening, the student qualifies for evaluation. A packet will be sent home which includes the Informed Notice and Consent for Evaluation, Gifted Consideration Parent Questionnaire, Procedural Safeguards, and the Gifted Characteristics Checklist (if referred by the parent). If the student was referred by the teacher, the teacher completes the Gifted Characteristics Checklist.
Upon receipt of the Consent for Evaluation, a Request for Service will be made, alerting the psychologist that the child needs to complete the evaluation. The testing will typically be completed within 90 school days the child is in attendance.
A school psychologist administers the intelligence test. When the testing is complete, a report is provided the school and a copy will be sent to the parent.
A student must have a composite IQ of 130 or higher to qualify for the gifted program. Students scoring a 127 or higher may be eligible if three teachers provide written recommendation for the student to be considered for gifted eligibility.
Eligibility for Gifted Program
When all the necessary documentation is received, the student's folder is forwarded to the Region Student Services Center for review by the Gifted Eligibility Committee. This committee determines if the student demonstrates a need for the gifted program based on the information available in the student's file. When a determination has been made, the file is returned to the school.
If a student is found ineligible for the gifted program, a letter is sent to the parents indicating such. A student can be reevaluated after three years.
If a student is found eligible for the gifted program, the gifted program teacher will contact the parent to set up a meeting to develop the student's Education Plan.
