Since October 2023, Northwest Elementary School has been excited to take part in the School Garden Project with 15th Street Farm! Our wonderful garden specialists, Myesha Tyler and Deidre Trapp, are dedicated volunteers from Pinellas County Schools who bring gardening to life for our students. Our program emphasizes essential life skills in conjunction with academic lessons. Myesha and Deidre encourage students to engage in cultivating plants and appreciating the outdoors.
Students learn how to compost kitchen scraps, make natural toothpaste, popcorn from the corn they grow, and create fresh meals using herbs and vegetables. More than just gardening, Ms. Tyler and Ms. Trapp help foster good character and a sense of community among our students.

Landon's Gardening Adventure
Landon is a fifth-grade student who has recently been inspired by the garden specialists, Mrs. Tyler and Ms. Trapp, at Northwest Elementary. After watching his classmates learn about various plants and gardening techniques, he decided it was time to start his own garden in the backyard.
He has planted two different types of tomato plants, along with lettuce, green onions, radishes, and even an avocado plant. In addition, he has lima beans growing strong. Although his green pepper, red pepper, yellow pepper, and grapefruit tree are still in the early stages and not yet showing any signs of growth, Landon remains hopeful and excited.
Landon has been thrilled about the gardening projects and wanted to take his passion home. He was eager to share his new knowledge and share with his family. Thanks to the support of his gardening teachers, he was allowed to bring home some starter plants.
In addition to the plants he initially chose, Landon has also decided to try growing green peppers, green onions, lettuce, cauliflower, cherry tomatoes, and strawberries. While he wanted to add even more varieties, he decided to start with these manageable options to ensure success.
Landon's gardening journey is just beginning, and he is excited to see what his backyard garden will produce!
