• Students at Midtown Academy have many musical opportunities to learn, explore, and perform.  Students attend music class twice a week with our two music teachers, Mr. Hayes and Mr. Stallcup. In music, students use a variety of instruments, games, creative movement activities, and singing to learn about rhythm, pitch, and much more.  Students use mallet pitched instruments, classroom instruments, drums, and instruments from around the world in class. Along with a foundation in musical concepts and literacy, students are given opportunities to create, improvise, and respond to stories and text with song, instruments, and movement. Primary students are given opportunities to perform in grade-level concerts. Students in 4th and 5th Grade are able to perform with our Mustang Chorus during our Winter and Spring Arts Nights.

Midtown Mustang Orchestra and Strings Instruction

During their weekly music classes with Mr. Stallcup, students in 1st and 2nd grade learn how to play the violin.  Students learn the basics of resting and playing posture with the instruments, how to pluck the strings as well as how to manipulate their bows.

In addition to having regular music classes twice a week, students in grades 3-5 can join the Midtown Mustang Orchestra. These students can continue their instruction on the violin or can choose to play either the viola or the cello. Students in the orchestra can come before school up to 3 days a week for instruction on their instruments and meet with their grade-level orchestras once a week during the school day. These students currently perform two major concerts per year as part of our Winter and Spring Arts Nights.

4th and 5th grade orchestra students can also choose to perform with the Annual Pinellas All County Elementary Orchestra in the spring, which consists of string students from across Pinellas County under the direction of a master conductor and teacher and performs at the Mahaffey Theater in St. Petersburg.
