    Academic Team

    Sponsor: Kevin Frain room P1

    Email: fraink@pcsb.org

The team consists of academically minded students who compete against teams of other Pinellas County schools.

The competition consists of four A-team members at one time answering questions in various subjects such as math, science, literature, history, foreign language (French or Spanish), art and music in a quiz bowl format.

Substitutions are allowed in certain times, so lots of people can play per match.

To become a member of this team you should have knowledge in one or several subjects, a desire to have fun while you learn and a competitive nature.

If interested in joining Academic Team or for further information, please contact Mr. Rundle at rundlee@pcsb.org.

    Competition Information

The season starts in October 2023.

The District Tournament is in February 2024.

     Competition Format-

    1. For the 2023-2024 season schools will compete in bi-weekly competitions with three other high schools in Pinellas County. Each team has 4 members competing at a time, but substitutions are allowed after most rounds to accommodate more people.
    2. Collaboration with your team during the match is encouraged, but only if the opposing team can also safely collaborate during the match.

Questions are answered by buzzing-in within 60 seconds. When the question is answered correctly, points are awarded and if wrong, points are deducted. All teams begin with a score of 100 points. Some questions are worth 5, 10 and 15 points.

    1. On a short answer or completion question, the reader may ask the respondent for clarification.
    2. On matching questions, an acceptable response is any combination of number/letter matching column to column.
    3. On multiple-choice questions, the best response is the correct letter or printed answer. No clarification from the respondent will be requested or permitted.

You may challenge an answer, if you think it is wrong or misstated. The competition judges will rule on the challenge.
