Seal of Biliteracy

  • The state of Florida passed a law in 2016 to give a Seal of Biliteracy to students who can prove a level of proficiency in English and another language.  Upon meeting criteria (see below), a student who has not already earned 4 credits in the language in which he/she qualifies, will be awarded up to 4 credits in the language, a designation on his/her transcript, and a seal on his/her diploma.  


     Criteria to earn a GOLD Seal of Biliteracy

    I earned a 4 or higher on the English Language Arts/Florida State Assessment AND 

    I qualify because of ONE (1) of the 3 options below:

    1. I earned 4 high school credits in one foreign language with a 3.0/4.0 GPA in the language classes.
    2. I received a qualifying score on a test and submitted my official scores to Pinellas County Schools*
    3. I submitted a portfolio that shows advanced low proficiency in the target language (this option only available for languages that are not taught in the district or tested)

    Criteria to earn a SILVER Seal of Biliteracy

    I earned a 3 on the English Language Arts/Florida State Assessment (or have an appropriate concordant score) AND 

    I qualify because of ONE (1) of the 3 options below:

    1. I earned 4 high school credits in one foreign language with a 3.0/4.0 GPA in the language classes.
    2. I received a qualifying score on a test and submitted my official scores to Pinellas County Schools*
    3. I submitted a portfolio that shows intermediate mid proficiency in the target language (this option only available for languages that are not taught in the district or tested)

    Appointments will be scheduled for students who have achieved a score of 3 or higher on the 10th grade B.E.S.T. ELA/reading assessment or have attained an equivalent concordance score.
