CHIEF NAVIGATION ELECTRONICS TECHNICIAN (SUBMARINES) CHRIS JOHNSON

    UNITED STATES NAVY, RETIRED

Chief Chris Johnson joined the Dunedin High School Staff as a Naval Science Instructor in August of 2020. He is a native of Southern California as well as 3rd generation Navy (his mother, uncle, grandmother and grandfather as well as step-father are Navy Veterans!) After completing four years of NJROTC he enlisted in the Navy on July 26, 2000, at the age of 18 and volunteered for submarine duty. In his Navy career, he most recently served Submarine Development Squadron Twelve Tactical Analysis Group (CSDS-12 TAG) as the Submarine Assistant Navigator where he served as the subject matter expert for submarine navigation and mission planning systems. Additionally, he served as the US Navy liaison for tactical development exercises involving the Royal Australian Navy as well as the Norwegian and Chilean submarine force. He was stationed onboard three submarines: USS Michigan SSBN-727, USS Georgia SSGN-729, USS Hawaii SSN-776 and deployed on several others.

After his mandatory medical retirement in 2015, Chief Johnson began service as a defense contractor for Network and Simulation Technologies attached to the Undersea Warfighting Development Center Tactical Analysis Group (UWDG TAG). Here he provided technical direction for the continued development and modernization of submarine navigation and mission planning systems as well as submarine tactics and operations. Prior to joining the Naval Science Department at Dunedin High School Chief Johnson worked at Bridgeport Military Academy as part of the Naval Science Department.

Chief Johnson obtained his Bachelor of Science in Christian Leadership and Management from Liberty University in 2014. Currently, he is working towards a Master of Divinity in Chaplain Ministry to allow him to work summers as a chaplain at the VA Medical Center where he will work with veterans in need. Chief Johnson is a firm believer in lifelong learning and is looking forward to continuing his studies while at Dunedin. When he is not doing or grading homework, Chief’s hobbies include Fantasy Football, watching sports, family outings in the Jeep, traveling, burning flicks (movies!), freshwater fishing, reading, listening to music, hanging out with friends (kids playdates!) and the occasional video game binge.
