Continuing Education Points

  • Within the validity period of each certificate, teachers must earn a total of 120 Component Points of Professional Development.

    Teachers with more than four subjects on their license will need an additional 60 Component Points.

     

    Routes to Earn 120 Component Points

    • Six semester hours of college credit (two, three credit, college courses)
    • Inservice Points
      • 60 in-service points are equivalent to three college credits.
    • Florida Subject Area Test
      • A passing score is equivalent to 60 Component Points, or three semester hours.
      • Must align with subjects on an existing license.
    • National Board for Professional Teaching Standards (NBPTS) Certificate
      • Must be a valid certificate.
      • Will renew a Florida certificate for subject(s) shown on the NBPTS certificate.
    • Teaching College Level Courses
      • Teachers who teach college-level courses can earn credit hours covered in the course.

     

     

    ESE:

    A portion of the 120 Component Points needs to include course work in Exceptional Student Education/Students with Disabilities (ESE/SWD). Teachers need to earn 20 ESE Component Points within the validity period of each temporary/professional certificate.

     

     

    Reading Mandate

    Teachers who hold an active, valid, certificate that includes any of the subject areas listed by the FLDOE will need to earn 40 component points (2 college credits) in evidence-based reading instruction and intervention (per Rule 6A-6.053, F.A.C). For credits to be applied toward the reading mandate, they need to have been earned within the last 5–10 years.

    Professional Development grounded in the science of reading will prepare teachers to provide instruction to students with characteristics of dyslexia and students with significant reading deficiencies.

    Training should include the use of explicit, systematic, and sequential approach to reading instruction to develop phonemic awareness, decoding skills, and multisensory intervention strategies.

    Teachers who are required to earn 40 Component Points in Reading include:

    • Elementary Education (K-6)
    • Prekindergarten/Primary Education (Age 3-Grade 3)
    • Elementary Education (1-6)
    • Primary Education (K-3)
    • English (1-6)
    • Middle Grades English (5-9)
    • Middle Grades Integrated Curriculum (5-9)
    • English (6-12)
    • Reading (K-12)
    • Reading Endorsement
    • ESOL (K-12)
    • ESE K-12

     

    Ed Leadership

    Starting July 1, 2025, professionals with Ed Leadership on their certificate will need to complete 20 in service points as part of their 120 in-service points for renewal.

     

    Renewal Credit Bank

     Teachers who are currently employed can access a transcript of earned component points, and the category, in their Professional Learning Network (PLN) account.
