• Purpose:  To give students the opportunity to write and present original poetry in spoken word poetry form.
     
    Meetings:  As scheduled, usually bi-weekly. Students are pulled from class with teacher approval to attend poetry workshops with a professional spoken word poet.  Students interested in joining should see Mrs. Wallace in the media center.

    History: Our poetry team began in 2010.  The first slam was in the spring of 2011.  Our first mentor was a 2007 alumnus of DHHS, Ben Beelman, whose stage name is Ben B the Truth.  Ben mentored our students for two years, then left for a career in the Peace Corps.

    Our current mentor is Liz Prisley, spoken word poet and a composition professor at USF St. Pete.  This is her third year as the poets' mentor. Liz also will be mentoring poets at four other schools this year.
     
     Our district wide poetry slam "Poets! Assemble!" will be held May 24 at the Largo Cultural Center from 6 - 9 p.m.
     
    We will be performing at the 4940 Expo on March 31, 2016 from 6-8 p.m.
     
    Poets will also presenting at the teachers' kick off event at Barnes and Noble, April 9, from 12-3.  Purchases made that day will help fund the DHHS literacy club.
     
    The school slam will be April 14, 2016 from 6:30 - 8 in the media center at the school.
